When Education Comes to Life

My Teaching Assistant  back in university said one time,  that all the boring things that we learned in school is useful for every day's life. At that time I thought he must be kidding.  But now,  when I really think about everything that I am doing,  I know that he is right after all.

I life in Jakarta's suburb,  where driving to the city takes 2 hours in a good day.  Which means, driving back and forth easily takes minimum 4 hours,  which leave me lots of time to daydream. Driving in the highway which has sharp turns,  I can't help but thinking about centrifugal and centripetal force that was exerted by my car and which speed I have to maintain to be able to stay on track instead of smashing the road side (which I almost did when I was in my first pregnancy.  But that - -  I can always blame the hormones).  When I press the break pedal,  that's the friction between my wheel and the asphalt that slows down my car.  Therefore  worn tire are more slippery, because they have lower coefficient of friction. And that's Physics!

When I take a bath,  I would need to adjust the faucet knob to achieved the desired temperature of the water.  This reminds me of the Process Control in Chemical Engineering class where 2 streams coming in with variable flowrates at different temperature mixed into 1 total water coming out at certain temperature.

When I cook rice,  we're turning rice to cooked rice through gelatinization process from the starch with the help of water and high temperature.  When I mix the eggs to make cake,  I am incorporating air into my egg to get the right consistency from that suspension. That's Chemistry!

Even when my kids walk with their loaded backpack,  I always lecture then about shifting in the center of gravity to the back.  Which makes them fell more easily if the floor is slippery. And that's Biology!

Call me a geek,  if you want.  But you can't stop me from having all these thoughts in my head..  :P
